Designer, Marique Yssel, was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1978. She completed her B-Tech degree in Fashion Design & Technology in 2001 at the Tshwane University of Technology. In 1999 she won the South African Smirnoff Fashion Award, and represented South Africa at the international leg of the competition held in Hong Kong. She subsequently also won the Elle New Talent in 2001 and was runner up in the Fair Lady designer awards in the same year. She presented a range for the South African Fashion Week, and also presented a range on the launch of Fashion TV South Africa.
Her first range, Marique Yssel, was her entry into the field of designer retail clothing. Whilst supplying the range to designer retail stores (The Space and Blackbeard & Dare), she started lecturing at The Design School Southern Africa and was Head of Department of Fashion Design.
Marique relocated to Cape Town during 2006 and started a CMT factory to manufacture her retail range ‘Bittersweet’ which was supplied to the Young Designers Emporium (YDE) for 4 years.
Urged by her passion for fashion design and her need to be instrumental in training and inspiring aspirant designers in the South African fashion industry, she accepted a position at FEDISA in 2012 as lecturer in fashion design, construction and communication.
Marique was also involved in the designing of various retail labels such as “BFF” of Phenomena and “Ginger Mary” and “TRS” at Truworths.
She launched her eponymous label in 2014 catering to the modern woman looking for sophisticated every-day clothing, with an emphasis on excellent quality, interesting design and affordable pricing.
